"Sassy's Blues (Live in Copenhagen)" was one of the first recordings I heard of Sarah Vaughan. It was when I had began my studies at University, and while it was quite a late discovery, it's always better late than never. I will admit that my ears were naive and ignorant in the beginning. I transcribed the tune rather poorly, and didn't fully appreciate her phrasing, syllables and luscious tone. I was rushing to complete my task and get graded on it for my exam.
Fast forward to my third year in Uni, where I was sitting in my room at the George Washington University Inn in D.C. with two of my musical peers. One of them searched Sarah Vaughan on YouTube and clicked on Lover Man. Suddenly it was like hearing this angel for the first time. Her voice was unbelievable - don't even get me started on the emotion.
Sassy will forever be one of my largest influences in the vocal world. After opening my ears to such a sound, it's impossible not to reference her or draw from her heart-warming timbre.
